Back to Life: A Journey of Transformation through Back Surgery by Pamela Douglas is the author’s in depth journal of life before, during and after back surgery. I was interested in reading this book because I spent time writing when I was waiting to deliver my son and spent a month in hospital. I found it both creative and healing and Pamela Douglas proves that as well.
She describes her preparation while awaiting surgery and shares some of her daughters journal entries. It was fascinating to read her daughters thoughts. I think we sometimes forget that our lives have an effect on others and reading this dynamic was a reminder of just how much.
Douglas teaches us to be a patient and advocate for ourselves during her stay. The writing actually places you in her shoes and the scenes of the hospital are incredibly vivid. You can actually begin feeling her transformation at the hospital. I’m definitely adding a journal and pen to a most have list for anyone having an operation or extended hospital stay. It can be so healing after the fact.
Easy to read, encouraging and inspiring book to read. Douglas also offers a section on practical advice for after, during and before surgery. I’m giving Back to Life: A Journey of Transformation through Back Surgery a must read status.
Pamela Douglas is an award-winning screenwriter with numerous credits in television drama, and also a fine artist. In May 2005, facing a degenerative spinal disease that threatened to leave her paralyzed, Pamela underwent major surgery. Her decision and the long recovery that followed inspired her to write BACK TO LIFE: A Journey of Transformation through Back Surgery. Written in journal form as she was going through surgery and recovery, the book takes the reader into the immediacy of the moment and through the transformational power of an experience far beyond surgery.
