I’m still waiting for some snow. It’s hard to believe this picture was taken in October and we haven’t seen any of the white stuff since. Tomorrow my little guy turns 8 and I’m getting ready for my last party of the season. People tend to forget it’s not over for me with Christmas. This year we are keeping it small and simple. Five children, pizza, a movie with popcorn and then cake! Nice, calm and quiet just like he likes. I learned an important thing about me while planning this party. This is one of those moments that really isn’t about me, but people tend to make it so.
My son wanted things to be very simple. I tend to go a bit crazy when planning a party. This has to be the most relaxed I’ve ever been about a kids party. I had to give up what I wanted it to be in order to make him happy. In turn, I have been made really happy. I’m through with yelling at my kids because I need them to act a certain way while I plan “their” party and give them the famous line, ” I’m doing all this for you!”. Seriously! I’ve done it and I’m sure some of you have as well.
So, after I walked out of the store with the big pink birthday cake my son just had to have, I laughed. Not exactly what I would have chosen to go with the movie and pirate theme, but he was so thrilled. From this day forward I promise to honor my children’s choices and put what I think they should be aside.I learned to listen to them and not judge. I learned this is NOT about me. Hopefully, they’ll never need to start a project me. They’ll know exactly who they are and what they want.
Well, a mother can dream can’t she?

I love this. I struggle with the same thing all*the* time. Why is it so hard? Pirates and pink cake? Why the hell not?!:)

Just happened to stumble upon your project here. As a guidance counselor I thought I had a pretty good grip on the whole upbringing process. I have since come to realize we are all a work in progress, now I basically wish for more time. You are on to something here…best wishes, keep the faith – stay the course. George
