I missed my blog dare post yesterday because of this! I convinced my kids it would be a good idea to go visit historical houses when it’s 23 degrees outside! This is one of those great mommy moments when I was trying to make them happy, but failed to see the big picture. Here is the scene: Free day at the historical homes right here in the Hudson Valley. The kids haven’t been in a while and had even forgotten about them. Bad mommy! So, when my son announced that Eleanor Roosevelt seemed like a great lady out of the blue, I thought perfect we’d take a trip.
So, as we are rushing out of the house I forget my kids gloves and let my 8 year old convince me that he doesn’t need his heavy jacket. I feel the cold ripping through my pants and wonder how I’m going to handle this weather. I tell the kids we will explore inside the homes and come back when it’s warm outside to play outdoors. Once again I neglected to take other people into account. So, I have the fact that it’s a holiday and free entry playing against me here. My oldest son has social issues and some crowds he can handle, but crowds in a small enclosed space, not so much.
If you can see this is just but a taste of the crowd going into the Vanderbilt for a tour. We stayed outside and ran around and took some pictures until we froze our fingers red. Needless to say we bailed on going to Eleanor’s home and decided to come back another day. The good part of the experience is that I know now that they are interested in exploring their local history. I also realized that before convincing them to do something I need to think it through a little better. I’m lucky that this all didn’t backfire on me!

I think it’s awesome your kids are interested in the local history. Still sounds like fun and getting out of the house is fun too.
