This past Saturday my son and I were introduced to The New Victory Theater and it’s programs. Our evening began at Dave & Busters with a meal and introductory family theater workshop. The New Victory Theater offers family workshops that relate to a New Victory Theater show. All workshops are taught by professional artists in beautiful studios where Broadway shows are rehearsed. Although my son did not want to participate in the evening workshop ( He has Aspergers Syndrome and the space was not working for him.) I know that his little brother would have loved it. I watched from a distance and the kids and adults truly found it worthwhile. I spoke with one of the artists from the New Victory Theater and her enthusiasm of the arts was unmatched. She told me about how the New Victory Theater works with schools and provides discounts for students and access to the arts by bringing workshops to schools. With all of the cuts in school budgets, this is an awesome program that I for one would like to support. Checkout the programs and shows at The New Victory at http://www.newvictory.org/
After playing some games at Dave & Busters we headed across the street to see Urban. Imagine a circus from the barrios of Cali, Colombia, that’s where URBAN comes from , “a take-no-prisoners acrobatic tour de force that balances risk and reward, defiance and delight.” Billed as a show for ages 8 and up, Urban combines trapeze, tightrope and triple dutch routines to a an original score of reggae/dance music. The worst part about watching this performance was that I couldn’t get out of my seat and dance! I held my breath a few times as I saw the performers do feats worthy of a stadium not a small stage. I was in awe at how beautiful and amazing the human body can be at it’s peak. I asked my son if he wanted to go to circus school and he just said, ” That looks so hard.” He had never seen anyone do such feats. If you are looking to introduce your child to a theater performance that won’t have them bored to tears, look right here. It’s edgy. modern and captivating. While the cast is mostly male, the females are strong and powerful. They demonstrate confidence at it’s best. Take a sneak peek at this video:
Urban will be at The New Victory Theater until October 21st. If you can’t make that show take advantage of a 20% discount towardsMojo playing at the New Victory from Oct 26Th – Nov4. This show caters to ages 5 and up.

Milena, we are so glad that you and your son came. My son has sensory issues bordering on Aspergers so I was in a similar situation. Rather than participate in the workshop, he opted to sit out and watch and quietly observe. I also know the workshops would be great for my daughter.
I am so glad we met in person and hope it happens again soon.

The show was fantastic, but truly learning about the New Victory Theaters programs involving the schools moved me. I wish that I would have had the opportunity when I was at school. It is such a gift to give back to the community. Schools need these types of programs these days.
