Do you remember that a month ago I received materials form Reading Horizons to help improve my children’s reading level? You can take a look at the post HERE. My children are 6 and 8 so I’ve been using the Discover Intensive Phonics Instructor Materials with them. My boys were excited about taking part in this program. My oldest son has Aspergers Syndrome and phonics does not come easy to him. He has always done well at school because of incredible memory, but struggles with his reading and comprehension. He has been willing to do just about anything to improve his reading level. I have tried several ways to teach him. Here is a bit about how Discover Intensive Phonics is taught:
The program is taught through multi-sensory, direct instruction, helping students internalize decoding/word attack strategies for more-accurate and fluent reading. There are computerized lessons, practice sessions, and phonics activities that correlate with every classroom lesson for individual skill reinforcement. For my children the multi-sensory part is huge. This is the part that uses movement and visual/verbal cues to help the student understand the sounds that make the words. It is recommended that the student gets daily instruction anywhere from 20-60 minutes about 5 times a week. My boys attend school full time so I haven’t been able to spend that amount of time with them. I wish I could. My youngest son 6 has always been a good reader, but now I learned from his teacher that he is one of the top three readers in his class. Score!!!!!! My oldest, although he has struggled is at grade level and honestly, I’m thrilled. I had doubts after he came home with a few tests that weren’t that great. He’s holding his own. I’d like to spend more time doing this program alone with him. The little one distracts him. However, I am convinced that this program works. It can be incorporated in the classroom or at home. The support that you can get online is valuable. They offer free webinars and as someone that is not teacher, I found these webinars to be a huge help.
The best part- Reading Horizons wants to offer one of my readers an opportunity to help their child achieve reading success. When used as directed the program averages a 2-5 grade level gain in 40-60 hours of instruction. Reading Horizons believes in their program so much that they offer a 60 day guarantee. Reading Horizons is offering one of my readers the same kit I received: Intensive Phonics Instructor Materials a $299 value plus free Tote bag. This kit is designed for homeschool use and is designed for ages 4-9. It works well with beginning or struggling readers and children with Dyslexia.
You will receive: 2 volumes of Teachers Manuals, Sound Essentials Manual ( includes games, flash cards, and black-line activity pages), Reverse Listening cards, 2 Large Posters, 11 Mini posters, an Enrichment CD-ROM and a set of 4 Little Books. The giveaway is US only. Please wait for the form to load and good luck! Giveaway ends Dec. 7Th.

This looks really interesting. I did a spelling program for my oldest as well as incorporated a lot of multi sensory activities that were phonics exercises. It definitely helped immensely. Love to check this out for youngest.
