Have you ever experienced unexpected medical costs or costs to due to a medical emergency? Not only have I, but I have witnessed many families that due to lack of coverage have had to reach out for donations to cover their costs. When my husband was injured I found out that many medical procedures that would help him had high co-pays. It was something we weren’t counting on. We figured that we had insurance and that we would be covered no matter what happened. We had insurance. Then the expenses started to add up, $500 here, $180 there, prescriptions, medical equipment that was not covered at all. We had no idea that we would have to spend so much out of pocket. Add into the co-pays, the fact that he was out of work, couldn’t drive and I’m a stay at home mom things were a bit scary for us. I don’t believe that the average person takes into account the added expenses when someone is injured or becomes ill. I find that I’m a planner and I never added up theses expenses myself, let alone the cost of child care, travel, and meal eaten on the road during doctors visits. It adds up to alot.
Well, Aflac has created a Real Cost Calculator to help you try to plan for medical emergencies in your life. You can enter your age and family size and the calculator does the work for you. It puts together the average cost of living, out of pocket and medical expenses that are not covered by most major medical insurances in a visual for you. When I entered my age, martial status, children and gender in the Real Cost Calculator I was able to find out that if I broke my leg the average extra costs would be around $11,661. I didn’t believe it. That is something we don’t just have lying around. If I were to get breast cancer that cost sky rockets to over $77,000. I think it’s important to take a look at your numbers and see where you stand if an emergency happened to you and your family.
