As a Good Cook Kitchen expert I have an opportunity to try new products and recipes, this time it’s the Good Cook Popcorn Baller. Oh yes, I tried my hand at making my very first popcorn balls. My son was excited to give me a hand since he’s had braces he hasn’t had the opportunity to eat a popcorn ball, but now they are off and he was ready to go. I needed to make it super indulgent while using some of his favorite flavors.
Ingredients:
9 cups popped popcorn
1 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 (3 ounce) package fruit flavored Jell-O® mix
1 tablespoon corn syrup
3 tablespoons water
6 tablespoons butter
The Steps:
1. Pop the popcorn: ( I used an on the counter popper)
2. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Grease two 8×12 inch glass baking dishes. Generously butter a heavy 2 quart saucepan.
3. Place popcorn in baking dishes evenly.
4. In the greased saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, sugar, gelatin, corn syrup and water. Heat to 250 to 265 degrees F (121 to 129 degrees C) I used my Good Cook Candy Thermometer., or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms a rigid ball.
5. Pour mixture evenly over popcorn and stir until coated.
6. Return popcorn to oven and bake 5 minutes; stir, then bake 5 minutes more. Break into clusters.
7. Store in an airtight container, in a cool, dry place.
I waited until the next day to add the marshmallow because I didn’t have time. The popcorn up to this point can still be formed into a ball if you wish, but my guys wanted marshmallows.
8. Melt butter In a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir in marshmallows( I didn’t use the mini’s because I had a 10 ounce bag of large marshmallows.) and cook until melted, stirring constantly. Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn and mix with spoon to coat evenly.
9. Let mixture cool slightly. Spray the inside of a Jolly Time Good Cook Popcorn Baller and fill with mixture. Place on cap and form balls. Make sure you let the mixture cool enough. My balls began to fall apart, so I wrapped them in plastic wrap and stored them in the fridge.
My Thoughts:
Personally, I’m not into sweet treats, but my boys loved these balls. They felt very heavy and dense to me. Maybe I needed to do either flavored or marshmallow, but not both. I’m not sure. I loved the Good Cook items I was sent. If I didn’t have them I would have had a hard time making these balls.

This looks like every kids dream! I would have never guessed that the color came from jello too. Popcorn balls are so reminiscent of my own childhood – my own kiddos would flip! How do you think it would taste without the corn syrup?
My niece loves sweet and just about anything that is pink or purple, so I’m going to try making these when I see her next! This could also be a great treat to bring to anything this month because the pink hue makes me think of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🙂
Popcorn balls are such a mess to make. This little gizmo could really help with that. I love the flavor and the color of the popcorn ball you made! Your Kids look like they are having fun.
