It’s been that crazy kind of holiday season around here! I always think this is the year I’ll have it all under control, but that’s a joke. This year I am more relaxed because we just came back from vacation. We drank, we ate, we swam with dolphins, toured the city and just let life stop for a while. It was nice. We needed a break. I learned quite a few things while we were away. The most important thing however is that no matter how crazy life gets you just need to find the quiet in your home. Enjoy your children, laugh with them, play games and stop the running. My son is going to be 10 in a few weeks and I’m wondering where all the time went. Here is the scoop:
I learned that:
10. we are not “all-inclusive” people. ( Don’t get me wrong, we needed a vacation where we didn’t have to be bothered with paying for things, but we like to explore. I want to eat where the people in town eat. I want to shop where they shop. The best travel stories and experiences I’ve had have been those odd and amazing things that happen when you aren’t being “directed”. Next time!)
9. you should never get your haircut before vacation. ( Okay, well I shouldn’t! Sure, let’s try something new I said. What a mess! Not the haircut, but the humidity + haircut = disaster! My mom actually asked me if I got a perm!)
8. I am an awesome packer. ( First bag free if it’s under 50 pounds. No scale and I made it 45.9 pounds!)
7. my kids are awesome vacationers. ( We went on a tour that included a 4 hour bus ride and lots of walking. No one said a peep! They always amaze me,)
6. my kitty actually missed us. ( My semi-non-social cat did things to me that I have never seen him do in 5 years. He sat on me, rubbed his head up and down my leg (like a dog) and purred for the longest time. I guess we do mean something to him.)
5. that even in a bikini I can still have more clothes on than most people on the beach. ( Yes, even grandma was sporting a thong. I kid you not.)
4. not having technology is awesome. ( We didn’t have WiFi in our room and our phones didn’t work. I thought I would panic, but it was a beautiful thing.)
3. it’s all about perspective. ( You can make or break your trip. I’m not going to lie and say everything was perfect on our trip because it wasn’t, but life isn’t perfect. You can’t control everything, so just letting it go and enjoying what is perfect goes a long way. A lesson I need to bring home for sure.)
2. all that high school Spanish is still in my head somewhere. ( Not bad, except for the part where people thought I was Spanish and started talking very quickly.)
1. there really is no place like home. ( Cold and snowing when we arrived – Oh well you gotta love New York!)

And I thought the only wrinkly grandma’s in thongs were down in Florida! Just goes to show that bad judgement is not a monopoly!

I need to remember the one about perspective, I tend to get stressed and forget to enjoy the moment!
