Last weekend my girlfriend and I attended Sunday’s performance of Shut Up, Sit Down & Eat at The Anne L. Bernstein Theater at the Snapple Theater Center in New York City. I had heard from a few of friends that this show would be a blast. I couldn’t wait to see it.
About the Show:
SHUT UP SIT DOWN & EAT ® America’s first plomedy! a.k.a Stai zitto siediti e mangia is the only cure for Italian insanity!
A plomedy is a new theatrical event that blends the wit of stand-up comedy and the intensity of a one-man show presented in an innovative play format by professional comedians.
Witness what happens when a therapist fails to show up for a group therapy session. Waiting in the therapy room are four impatient Italian Americans who decide to take their issues into their own hands and invent a new type of therapy – Italian therapy!
The plomedy is written and performed by four outstanding seasoned New York comedians. It features the comedic styles of Tina Giorgi, Joe Moffa, Chris Monty, and Eric Tartaglione. Eve Brandstein directs the plomedy.
My Review:
OMG! I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard in a long time! My friend and I were in the front row of this small intimate theater and once the laughs began it was hard to keep it together. Each character had their own story that the actors/comedians played without one single fault. I felt as if I truly was a voyeur at a therapy session. The audience seemed so engaged as the characters took their turns. There were a few moments when the laughter stopped such as a time when 9/11 was mentioned. The story although allowed the actors to take pause, but quickly bring us back to the humor. One surprising moment for me was the fact that this show actually rekindled some childhood memories of mine. Growing up Italian I can honestly tell you that many of the stereotypes portrayed are true, if not in my family, but others that we know. The plastic on the furniture, the threat of the wooden spoon, and Sunday dinners are all talked about here.
