Eddie the Eagle opens in theaters today February 26th and I had the opportunity to take part in a phone interview with Ania Sowinski. Ania Sowinski plays “Carrie” Eddie’s publicist in the film, who helps book the press conferences for him during the Olympics.
I was excited to speak with Ania Sowinski about her role in Eddie the Eagle. As a born and bred Londoner, I wondered what working on this film actually meant for Ania. She spoke fondly of remembering the Olympics that year even though she was only 8 years-old. She remembers her brother doing impressions of Eddie and the whole family gathering the television to see this Brit that came out of nowhere to compete. It was a big deal.
Eddie the Eagle is about a boy that dreamed about being in the Olympics and made his dream come true. When I asked Ania about her dreams this is what she had to say:
Ms. Ania Sowinski: “For me, I was a child actress, and I was really quite successful at a very young age. So, it didn’t feel so much a dream. In fact, it still is a dream.
I don’t think you ever stop dreaming. There’s always the next level to go to. So, I always wanted to be on the stage. Film is what I love. I have crazy dreams like I want to be in films. I love film scores. So, I want to be in films that have Ennio Morricone, while he’s still alive, scores underneath and that are big and grand and epic.
I don’t think I ever stop dreaming. That’s what I do. I’m a big dreamer in all parts of life. At one point I wanted to be a rocket scientist. At one point I wanted to be a marine biologist because I swam with dolphins. And that was it. That was a dream. So, I’m a big dreamer, and I still am.”
She was interested in taking on this role because it’s such a great “British story” and everyone loves an underdog. Ania said the film had special meaning to her and her British roots because:
Ms. Ania Sowinski: It’s so great when a country comes together to celebrate something that–at the time, look, Eddie was–we didn’t really know what he was. He sort of came from nowhere. And when the British pull together, they really pull together.
