I was sent a screening copy and view Urban Hymn with my husband this weekend. As a fan of music, drama, and independent movies I was thrilled over this opportunity. Here is a little bit about it.
Urban Hymn:
A redemptive coming of age story about a wayward teen, Jamie (Letitia Wright), who is encouraged by an inspiring and unconventional social worker Kate (Shirley Henderson), to use singing as an escape from her troubled background. Jamie’s loyalties soon become torn between Kate and her possessive and volatile best friend, Leanne (Isabella Laughland).

My thoughts on Urban Hymn:
As a winner of multiple awards, including two at the International Young Audience Film Festival, I thought I might be able to view this “Not Rated” film with my entire family, but that was not the case. The language can be foul at times and the fight scenes violent. My guys are young, but I’m thinking maybe 14 and up would be appropriate depending on your teen’s maturity. While the plot line might seem familiar, a troubled teen saves herself through music, the story does develop in many unexpected ways. We learn that not everyone can be saved and that some people are worth fighting for. The characters are fully developed and convincing in their roles. A great performance by all the actors. This is a beautiful and heartbreaking film that gets you thinking. Worth checking it out!

You mentioned that the language was foul and that the scenes were violent. Would you rate is pg 13? Or would it fall under a mature rating? I would love to see this movie but I am wondering if this is a flick I should watch when the kids aren’t home. Normally we don’t watch movies with a lot of cursing.
