I’ve been making my own detergent for almost a year now, and I have to say I’m thrilled with the results. No, more bottles or boxes and so little waste. A five gallon bucket lasts me about a few months and a little added essential oil gives my wash just the right smell. Here is what I do:
To make 5 gallons you’ll need:
- 2/3 bar of Fels Naptha soap
- 1 cup of Borax Powder
- 1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
- a bucket
- water
First you will grate the soap and put it in a saucepan on the stove. Add 12 cups of water and heat until the soap melts. Then you’ll want to add the washing soda and borax, stir until it is all dissolved.
Now, in your bucket pour 8 cups of tap water, then add your soap mixture and stir together. Then you’ll want to add another 44 cups of water and continue to stir.
You’ll want to let it set for 12- 24 hours. I always let it set 24 hours. It dries in an odd consistency. It kind of jellies up, but it’s all the same stuff so there is no need to mix it again. It dissolves in the machine. 1/2 cup to a load of laundry. If it’s my hubbies work clothes I use a full cup.
