My oldest son is amazing in the true sense of the word. (not in that amazing way that he is my son, but beyond that) He was spelling and reading by the time he was three and now at seven he can blow most people away with his geography skills. When a first grader brings up the conflicts of China and Taiwan in his book report you know he has a grasp of the world that most people don’t. He also has Aspergers which can make things challenging, especially when he narrows his interest on to a single topic. Last night we touched each others hearts in a very special way.
For the last few days he has been drawing and journaling in a tiny note pad that he received as a party favor. He tossed the rest of the goody bag aside and only wanted this pad of paper. I was amazed once again of the depth of his writing. Now mind you, I’m not saying his spelling and grammer was correct, but his thoughts were beautiful. The images that he sees around him are truly something to behold and the way he translates them to paper breathtaking.
That night I shared with him something that I don’t share with anyone – my journal. I showed him my writings and drawings and clippings of things I’ve pasted together in my own book. He was blown away. We made a connection in that moment like we have never made before. When I asked him if he would like a book like mine his eyes lit up and excitedly he said yes! So, before bedtime I presented him with a journal just like mine. Just for him.
I thought I would break in two when he hugged me so tight! He ran and put it in his room to wait till tomorrow. As, I tucked him into bed his eyes were filled with tears. He said, ” I cry mommy because I am so happy. You made me so happy my eyes water.” Now, my eyes are watering as I write this and I am so happy. Our souls touched tonight like the day he was born.
My thoughts: Always remember to listen to your child, show interest in what they like and that will strengthen your bond as a family. These tiny minds have so much to teach us.
