My family and I got to enjoy a lovely Sunday at The Magnet Theater watching and interacting with the pirates in Help Wanted: Pirates! If you are going to be in New York City this Summer or this holiday weekend with the little ones you should definitely check out this show. It runs Saturdays at 11 A.M. and 1 P.M. and Sundays at 11 A.M. through July 8Th.
Here is a little information about the show:
Captain Squid and his fun-loving band of pirates are being hunted by Sir Nigel, the maniacal leader of the British Navy. They need to clear out of Nigel’s waters, and fast, but there aren’t enough pirates to man the ship.
In an accidental stroke of genius, Squid recruits the audience! Join Captain Squid and his motley crew for this musical adventure, where children learn the tools of the pirate trade. The audience moves from one location to the next, learning how to walk, talk and squawk like a pirate. Will Squid’s new recruits (that’s you) be ready in time to find the treasure? No two shows are the same in this delightful interactive musical!
Review Crew:
The crew consisted of myself, my husband, Noah 8 and Owen 6. When they first informed us that we would be moving throughout the theater my husband and I just looked at each other like, “Oh crap.” What are we going to have to do? Then the show began and my oldest said, ” I don’t want to be a pirate. ” I told him he didn’t have to be a pirate and prayed that no one would insist. Well, I was right. My youngest jumped up right away and took part in the show, while my big guy sat and watched with us. It was truly nice that we all could share this experience and have it not be awkward. The cast was funny and the music excellent! I’m never quite sure what to expect from a kids show, but this appealed to both adults and kids. Everyone could have a good time! My favorite character was Rear Admiral Nigel Wright, although honestly the entire cast was lovely.
When we did have to move around the theater it wasn’t awkward at all. I feel that especially for a kids show that movement was important to keep the children engaged and it worked. It seemed a good time was had by all, not just my family. The show is under an hour long which I find kid friendly!
The bad mommy move to avoid: Some of the children that came for the performance had pirate gear on! Hats, swords, hooks, eye patches, you get the hint and mine had nothing. My older son doesn’t like to dress up, but my youngest begged me to buy him a sword. ( They have them there for sale.) I had to say no because I have still have some at home in packages from pirate parties that we have had at the house. He lived, but I still felt that mommy guilt. So, bring your pirate gear or buy some when you arrive!
Performances run Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Sundays at 11:00 a.m. from May 19- July 8. All tickets are $25.00. The show is appropriate for children ages 4 to 12.
