We have been taking my boys to New York City regularly lately and on our Summer Bucket List is to hit several museums. Chet The Architect Shows You New York City’s Museum Mile Pocket Guide is perfect for children to learn about New York City’s Museum Mile. My oldest (8) loves learning facts about people and buildings. This fold out map and guide easily gives him all that information. It leads you through 9 museums on 5Th avenue. It includes The Met, Guggenheim, The Jewish Museum, Museum of African Art, El Museo del Barrio, Museum of the City of New York and more. Chet gives a description of each museum, the architect that built it, what style it’s built in and the year.
The book has lovely illustrations of the buildings. It is both written and illustrated by Kathyrn Koller. My son was so excited when he saw this guide and he can’t wait to bring it with us when we go on our adventures. I think this would be a way to make a child that might not be so excited about visiting a museum interested. I admit I learned many things by reading this this pocket guide!
Chet The Architect How To Draw New York City’s 5th Avenue Museum Mile is an awesome interactive book that shows children how to draw the museums! By putting shapes together the children get to create the architecture they are learning about. Each of the 9 museums are broken down into a three step process for children to imagine, draw and build. First you have a drawing of each museum with fun facts about the architecture. The next step is a guide to enable you to draw the museum with a spot to draw it as well. The third step is a full page dedicated after each museum to give you the chance to be your own architect. As, a parent I love the fact that the pages can easily be torn out. This enables your little architect more freedom with their space.
I like both of these books because I have two very different boys and this let’s both of them get an experience that is all their own. My little one is the artist and he loves the learn to draw book, while my big guy is the fact finder. This gives them a bridge to share information. I’ll post some pictures of my sons creation from the book soon.
