Recently I was asked to review Patch, a self watering planter to help you grow food all year round. I was interested in trying Patch because I have always wanted to grow herbs year round, but I seem to be challenged in the green thumb area. Several attempts have failed. I figured maybe a self watering system would help me with my issues and give me a taste of freshness. Then I got the Patch and was paralyzed with fear when I saw this origami style package. I put it aside because I wasn’t secure putting it together, but when I did it was so easy! This compact package can easily be shipped to someone as a gift. I see this as a first apartment, home, and foodie item. It was so much fun to assemble. The planter is 12”x6”x6”, holds 4 liters of soil and the water reservoir holds 2 liters of water. When flat packed the Herb Planter is only 12”x6”x1” making for easy shipping and storage.
My Results:
So far success! I have parsley and basil growing. I followed the directions, used potting soil, and starter plants. I chose not to use seeds because it would take me forever to review the product, but you can start from seeds. If I make it through the Winter with my herbs I want to get another Patch for year round salad. This has been so easy to use. The round tube you see in the corner is how you water and check your water levels. That’s it! You need to check it daily and fill when it’s empty. I have been filling mine once a week. I wish it was a bit longer and less wide to fit my window better, but I have made it work. I’m a fan and love this product. I hope I can grow this Winter!
About Patch:
The Patch herb planter body is made with Tyvek (a HDPE), which has all the properties of paper film and fabric. It’s fully recyclable, washable, and stain resistant. The interior components are made of PP #5. All of these components are fully recyclable. The Patch planters “self water” by using a technique called sub irrigation, which allows the water to enter the soil through capillary action; essentially the same process by which a paper towel, or sponge soaks up water. This process ensures the plants in your Patch always have the perfect amount of water. All you have to do is make sure there is water in the reservoir. My soil has always seemed moist and my plants has never looked hot, tired or wilted. ( And we have recently been in a heat wave!) I have been using Patch for a month now. I love it!
