Peter Pan takes on a new twist in Belvoir’s adaptation of the J.M. Barrie classic now till October 13 at The New Victory Theater.
About the Show:
In this first U.S. premiere at the New Victory Theater Belvoir’s artistic director, Ralph Myers takes Peter Pan to new levels. No children, no tights, and a single stage set in the 1980’s in Suburban Australia. Belvoir hails from Sydney, Australia and is know for “blowing the dust” off of the classics. Myers felt a connection to the J.M. Barrie classic and Australia. He comments, โI was struck by the uncanny feeling that this could secretly be a play about Australia โ a world off on its own, full of oddities, constantly trying to leave its past behind. Australia, like Peter, has a wonderful and annoying determination never to grow up.โ
The Review:
AWESOME SHOW!!!!!!!!!! I laughed so hard and from what I can tell so did everyone else. Some of the humor went right over the kids heads, but they enjoyed it just as much. The cast is incredibly talented as they portray children and even “Nana” the dog nanny. I’m always amazed when a show on a single set can pull off an amazingly interesting and exciting production. I didn’t want it to end. Captain Hook was one of my favorites right up until he was eaten my the crocodile! This is truly a piece of children’s theater that adults can enjoy without being bored to tears. Actually, I think adults will enjoy this as much, if not more than than children. I wouldn’t limit this production to children. I would go as far as saying this would make a great date night. Short, sweet, and full of fun! What are you doing this weekend?

I love when productions are thought of as children’s since they are based on a children’s movie but have humor and are entertaining enough for adults. It sounds like the best of both worlds keeping the adults laughing and the kids mesmerized by beloved characters.

I love the story of Peter Pan…. the adventure and the freedom that he had. Awesome. If only we had the option to go back to being a kid every now and then.

I love the theater! It has been a few years since I have been to see a show but the last one I saw was “Of Mice and Men.” The book is one of my favorites and the play was really good, too. ๐
