New York Performances: September 26 – October 13, 2014 at The New Victory Theater
This is storytelling at it’s finest! The PigPen Theatre Company delivers a performance billed for ages 8 and up that kept this 43-year-old mom fully engaged and wanting more! If you follow my blog at all you know that my family and I are big supporters of The New Victory Theater and their programs. I can’t say it any better than my 8-year-old when he said, “This is the best show I have ever seen here!” The next thing I know is that he is planning a series of skits and songwriting sessions. The cast worked amazingly well with each other and from what I could tell delivered a flawless performance. This mom couldn’t be happier. Here is the scoop:
About The Old Man and The Old Moon:
Fresh off a national concert tour and a run at Williamstown Theatre Festival, PigPen Theatre Co. comes to Times Square to open the New Victory 2014-15 season with The Old Man and The Old Moon, an epic tale about a man who must abandon his duties of filling up the moon with liquid light so he can cross the seas in search of his missing wife. Scaled up to fill the New Vic proscenium stage, this luminously lo-fi spectacle features new puppetry sequences and script changes for a fast-paced single act play with music. With a rollicking array of ever-changing characters, inventive theatrical effects and infectious contemporary folk music, The Old Man and The Old Moon premiered at the Gym at Judson in New York City in the fall of 2012.
About PigPen Theatre Co.
PigPen Theatre Co. began creating their unique brand of music, film and theater as freshman at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in 2008. They have since produced their original plays Off-Broadway and at regional theaters around the country – earning them critic’s picks from The New York Times, Time Out New York, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Boston Globe, and many more, ranking them in the top ten theatrical events of 2011, 2012, and 2013. They were also the first group to win the NYC Fringe Festival’s top honor for a play two years in a row in 2010 and 2011. Their plays include The Nightmare Story, The Mountain Song, and The Old Man and The Old Moon. Their debut indie-folk album, Bremen, was featured by American Songwriter and was named #10 album of the year in The Huffington Post’s 2012 Grammy preview. Their follow up EP, The Way I’m Running, was released on October 8th, 2013, and was premiered by American Songwriter. PigPen is also thrilled to be working with Writers House, one of the world’s leading young adult literary agencies, to develop their debut children’s novel.
Take a Look:
The performance lasts 90 minutes with no intermission. Perfect for a family with young children. Ticket prices start at $15 for balcony seats. The view is still amazing no matter where you sit in this incredible theater. The New Victory Theater is the oldest operating theater in New York and being right in Times Square truly envelopes you in the theater experience. I believe that children are never too young to enjoy good theater programing and that’s what you can find at The New Victory.
THE OLD MAN AND THE OLD MOON is supported, in part, by a Presenter’s Grant from The Jim Henson Foundation.
