3 Generations Available Now
This film features some of my favorite actors, including Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning, Susan Sarandon, and Tate Donovan. I was thrilled to receive a review copy. Produced by the same team that brought you Little Miss Sunshine, the film is funny and inspirational.
3 Generations Official Synopsis:
3 Generations tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has struggled with the body assigned to him at birth and is determined to start transitioning. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.

My Thoughts:
3 Generations gives the audience a look at a modern family struggling with a teens journey through gender reassignment. The character performances are strong as Elle Fanning portrays “Ray” a trans teen. We see him juggle with his feelings about being born in the wrong body. The twist is that his progressive lesbian grandma just doesn’t get it. Fanning does an amazing job in this role. Somewhere along the line the film pulls focus from Ray and we get a look at Maggie, (Watts as Ray’s mom) and her journey as a single mom that lives with her mom, Sarandon, to save money. While Sarandon and Emond, play the lesbian grandparents, they lend the voice of reason throughout, but while they are open-minded they are still confused about transgender issues. I suppose since the film is about 3 generations we need to look at all of the pieces they play together, but I would have preferred to have the focus more on Fanning instead of steering off. I watched this movie with my son (13) and he said he thought it was an interesting look at what some trans teens might be dealing with in their lives. He said it gave a good perspective for understanding this issue more in-depth. In a nutshell, I liked it and it’s worth the watch!
