Yes, there is a lesson for that photo, or one of the many lessons I have learned thus far in May. These last two weeks have been another personal growing experience for me. Back in February I wrote a post about my husband being away and what I learned. It is now May and he has been away for two weeks now! This is the longest time we have been apart since we have been together! It was much easier this time than the last, but I swear my whole body aches for him to return home. Even though he is away I don’t feel alone in the least, as I know he’s thinking about me and our boys somewhere out there at work. I can’t wait till Friday when I get to see him! Now here we go….
One lesson at a time:
10. If you keep finding your self in the same place, if the same thing keeps happening to you, then you have to stop and take a look at yourself. (Take some time and see what it is that you are contributing to the situation and see what you can do to make it better. Here is your power.)
9. When the authentic “Italian” deli advertises that they have espresso available, but post a photo of a Cuban brand coffee you kind of question whether or not you want to eat there. ( Seriously? In a pod too!)
8. My son didn’t know how to use a can opener. (I must say I was both afraid and impressed that he was able to open the can without one. This lesson is brought to us by eating fresh foods and not using cans! OMG!)
7. There is always going to be that one person that complains all the time if they (or their family) aren’t the center of attention. (Nothing you can do about it, so have a good time and celebrate with those that are there for you.)
6. Two types of movies you shouldn’t watch when your spouse is away: horror and super sexy films. (It just never ends well. You just end up scared and/or horny.)
5. When you allow your children to cook, no matter how well versed they might be in the kitchen, please go over basic fire safety! ( This happened during the can opening incident. I was there for this part, but that kid went into a panic!)
4. I learned that 25 grams of fiber are what you should shoot for in a day. It also doesn’t mean that you are getting it if you eat well. ( I had hit a plateau in my weight loss when it was suggested that I take a look at my fiber intake. Yeah, I wasn’t even close. I tightened it up and within 3 days lost 1 pound and half. Hmmmm.)
3. We were denied financial aid for my son’s tuition. ( What lesson is here? Well, I guess I need to get my act together and scrounge up $830 a month . Talk about motivation.)
2. I’ve been able to move on and separate myself from things that people post and say without taking it personally. ( I still get mad, but I don’t engage. I also know that it’s not about me. Talk about growing up.)
1. I think the greatest lesson I learned this month has been to keep my mouth shut. ( This kind of ties into number 2. My thought process: Is it worth it? Will this hurt someone? Will this person even understand my point of view?)

Girl, I feel you on the financial aid. Son’s financial aid paperwork just got processed for the college he has chosen and been accepted to. We have to come up with an additional 1200 a semester. Talk about motivation to work hard yep.

Now that you mentioned this, I need to make sure my son knows how to use a can opener. I know my daughters do. So far May has been ok, a few setbacks but I made it through. I am learning to just keep my mouth shut more too.

Number 10 reminded me of a saying that is never far from my mind. “If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got!” This is something for some reason I specially remember on Mondays when I am back to work and looking to improve. It is another Monday! Time to learn something new!

I love your fiber tip! I need that one. I giggled about the espresso one and what movies NOT to watch when he’s away. I generally watch Hallmark movies when my husband is away because he can’t stand them and they don’t cause fear or horniness! (well.. maybe the latter if it’s a cute actor)

Hmm, you mentioned that YOU have to scrounge up money for your kid to go to school.
Is your son going to get a part time job to help?
Our oldest is graduating from university next month so I am well aware of how expensive it can be. She had registered education savings plans and worked to help cover her tuition.
Now she has a degree and is debt free so it is doable!!

LOL- Yes ME- he is 14 and is going to be attending a private high school. So, no he isn’t getting a job until he is of age. He is saving us money, by taking over our lawn care- so that will save us some cash! We also have a savings plan for college. We will tackle that monster once we get there.

Oh my, that can looks frightening. I’m glad he managed to get it open without slicing his hand at least

I am glad that no one was injured in the can incident. Well except your pot holder, that you can replace. I can’t believe how quickly May is going. Enjoy the rest of the month.

It sounds like your month was full of both some humorous lessons (can opener) and more serious one. On financial aid-don’t give up yet! Has he applied for scholarships like local Rotary ones etc? Some local organizations have different college scholarships open thru senior year of college. Might be worth a shot!

These are all great lessons! It amazes me that no matter how old we get there is ALWAYS something new for us to learn every day, whether it’s about ourselves or the world in general.

What a month it has been for you- way to push through the difficulties and hold onto the important lessons. Now, off to go jam pack my dinner with some fiber!

I can definitely relate to many of these! I can’t wait for May to be over though, it’s been a stressful month for my family and I. I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut, let people (friends) go, and how to step away from certain situations and focus on what’s more important.

So sorry to hear that your son was denied financial aid. I have one currently in college and 2 in high school. I am scared that by the time we get to the youngest, she is not going to be eligible for financial aid because we took out so many loans for the other 3. Fortunately she gets straight A’s – so I am hoping she can get a scholarship. I wish you the best in coming up with the money for your son’s tuition!
