Diary of a Stage Mother’s Daughter: A Memoir is written by actress Melissa Francis. Many of you probably know her like I do from playing Cassandra on Little House on the Prairie. When I first picked up the book I figured it would be your typical child star, life in ruins, my mom is awful, kind of book. Only one of those things is true ( the awful mom), but the main focus of this book for me is the triumph of young girl over her mother’s obsession. Reading a book like this as a parent is eye opening. The recall that a child has is amazing. Everything we do as parents is watched and remembered. I felt terrible for Melissa and her sister Tiffany. The two seemed like talented and smart young girls. Their mother took advantage of that fact and exploited it every chance she got and never once seemed to just love them. When her mother began focusing only on Melissa, Tiffany began living her life feeling unloved. She suffered over it for many years.Unlike other child stars, Melissa overcomes her dysfunctional family and somehow makes it out of the business without turning to drugs or alcohol. Today Melissa is a mom of two that has broken the cycle of emotional abuse. I couldn’t put it down.
This is more than just a memoir, but a look at parent /child relationships. As a mother I appreciated reading it, pick it up and tell me what you think. It does not disappoint!
