I’m big on rules. I feel that children need to learn about boundaries and proper behavior so that when they go out into society they are considerate of others. I think rules give children a sense of security. They know what is expected of them no matter what situation they might be in. Also as a parent I don’t worry much when going to someones house, of course they are kids and need to be reminded, but my guys know the rules.
The best part about rules are when you break them! Surprised I say that are you? As much as I believe in boundaries they need to pushed sometimes in order to achieve greatness. Now that’s a bit much to explain to a 3 and 5 year old, so we start small.
We ALWAYS eat at the kitchen table as a family. It is something I find important. So imagine the excitement when I told the boys we were going to have a carpet picnic! Daddy was working another night and it had been raining for days, so we were going to go all out. Of course I had to keep it somewhat healthy, but fun. We had whole wheat English muffin pizzas, Applegate farms hot dogs (no nitrates), hummus and carrots with broccoli. We put in a movie and ate in front of the TV.
I know what some of you are thinking-we do this every night big deal. Well, it was for my guys because we don’t ever eat and watch TV. It also taught them it’s okay to break the rules sometimes and move out of your comfort zone. It can be fun! My favorite part: they still prefer to eat at the table! So there goes the theory ” if you let them do it once they will always want to do it”.
I’d love to hear about fun things others do with their kids to mix it up a bit. Please leave a comment on my site!
