So to break in my new stove I decided to try a recipe from? 5 Ingredient Fix: Easy, Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes. I received a copy from the publisher for review and I picked the Curried Sugar Pumpkin Soup recipe. I had just gotten 2 baby sugar pumpkins from my CSA and I couldn’t wait.
I love pumpkin soup and this was great. But I’ll tell you the real deal with this book. First of all the soup was yummy, but time consuming. No surprise as, you have to puree the pumpkin after it is roasted.
Here is the scoop: The recipes in this book are elegant and yes contain only 5 ingredients. If you follow Claire Robinson on the Food Network you will love this book. The pictures are beautiful and suggestions are offered about extra ingredients you might want to add if handy. Another plus, the book actually has a section on what you should have in your kitchen, as far as cookware, utensils and appliances. The recipes look quite tasty and I love the section on cocktails!
Now the cons: I can only think on of two. First of all, 5 ingredients says easy/ordinary to me and this is not. I couldn’t just pick and make something out of this book. Some of the ingredients aren’t things that you just happen to have handy like capers, toasted pecans, creme fraiche and figs. As a mom of 2 little guys I couldn’t just grab this book and whip something up.
Overall, I think it’s a beautiful book, with interesting, elegant recipes and it would make a great gift item this holiday season.
