Our House Is Round: A Kid’s Book About Why Protecting Our Earth Matters is perfect reading for children to explain why we, “reduce, reuse and recycle.” I know my boys know those words, but do they really understand what they mean. I took it to the test and was surprised that maybe they didn’t grasp the concept as well as I thought. We sat down together and read Our House is Round by Yolanda Kondonassis. Here is what my boys thought:
Boys 8 and 6 Review: Noah (8), I love the illustrations. ( Yes, said that!) They have beautiful colors and I love looking at pictures of the Earth. These are nice. I wasn’t sure why mom always yells at me to turn of the lights, but now I understand. I also didn’t know about pollution and how it hurts our Earth. I only knew not to throw my garbage on the ground. I like this book and want to read it again. I like that I learned something from reading it.
Owen (6): I like the pictures, too. The stuff about the Earth getting warm and pollution in the air scared me a little. I don’t want that to happen. I feel bad when I forget to turn off the lights and I promise to try harder. I thought the book was okay. I liked the poem at the end.
Mom of Two: I really thought I had a grasp on teaching my kids about the Earth, but I was wrong. This book has the perfect amount of information delivered in an accessible way for kids. I love that it has a dictionary of terms in the back. I admit that as a parent I don’t always have the answers. I also admit I find it difficult to explain certain terms so this is a huge help for me. It also includes a “Messy Planet Action Plan” with suggestions on what kids can do to help our planet. I think the illustrations are lovely and helped keep my children engaged in the information I was reading them. I highly recommend this book. It’s geared for ages 5-9 and it compares what it would be like it we lived in a round house to the Earth being round.
