About Super Genes: Unlock the Astonishing Power of Your DNA for Optimum Health and Well-Being:
The authors of the New York Times bestseller Super Brain present a bold new understanding of our genes and how simple changes in lifestyle can boost genetic activity. The leap into “radical well-being” is a promise waiting to be fulfilled.
According to Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, you are simply the sum total of the genes you were born with. You are the user and controller of your genes, the author of your biological story. No prospect in self-care is more exciting. Learning how to shape your gene activity is at the heart of this eagerly anticipated book from the duo behind Super Brain. That book, which became a bestseller around the world, was also a hit PBS special viewed by millions in the United States.
For decades medical science has believed that genes determined our biological destiny. Now the new genetics has changed that assumption forever. You will always have the genes you were born with, but genes are dynamic, responding to everything we think, say, and do. Suddenly they’ve become our strongest allies for personal renewal. When you make lifestyle choices that optimize how your genes behave, you can reach for a state of health and fulfillment undreamed of even a decade ago. The impact on prevention, immunity, diet, aging, and chronic disorders is unparalleled.
Daring and historical as well as practical and evidence-based — with dozens of ways to begin changing your life now — Super Genes: Unlock the Astonishing Power of Your DNA for Optimum Health and Well-Being takes a quantum leap into the frontiers of self-care. It will revolutionize how we understand ourselves and the health of those around us.
The Review:
“Super Genes” by Deepak Chopra, M.D. and Rudolph E. Tanzi, Ph.D.
explores the idea of being in control of our genes. Through diet,
exercise, meditation and making overall changes to our lifestyle to
decrease stress and weight and increase positivity in our lives, we
can alter our genes, DNA and general well-being. In the end, we can
also alter future generations by passing on positive practices to our
children, grandchildren and beyond.
If you knew the formula to changing your future, would you input the
formula and allow for a healthier, more positive lifestyle? At first,
most people might say yes. After reading “Super Genes” those same
people may feel it is too much work to make this happen. I found this
book to be very interesting. I will take from it a little from each
section. I do not feel that I can do everything suggested, however
there is always room for improvement to be healthier, happier and more
positive.
I was most interested in part two of “Super Genes” where Chopra and
Tanzi talk about how to make changes for radical well-being. Their
main topics discussed are diet, stress, exercise, meditation, sleep
and emotions. Each topic is broken into making changes that are easy,
harder and experimental. From eating fatty fish twice a week to
eliminating wheat entirely, you can choose what works best for you and
helps you to feel better. You may find that adding more vegetables in
your diet is easy, while giving up coffee is impossible. Other
changes may be harder to make. Decreasing stress would do us all
good, however, not everyone may find the time or have the interest in
something like meditating every day or leaving behind a stressful job
and becoming a business owner. While we may all feel that we want to
or need to exercise, time may not be available in our often busy
lifestyles. Start small and build up from a walk after dinner to
joining an exercise class.
As our surroundings have changed over time, we have needed to adapt to
changes such as a different environment, stresses, increased pollution
and processed foods. Past generations did not have these issues to
consider and their bodies were not as stressed. According to Chopra
and Tanzi, we can make changes in our lives to change the future of
humanity, it just depends on how much we are willing to change.
In a nutshell, I liked the book and would recommend it, especially if you are looking for suggestions about sleep, exercise and food to change your life.

This is an interesting book. My husband is a physician — he tells patients all the time that if the “genes” are stacked against you, you can change things by changing your lifestyle. Make extra healthy food choices, exercise to rev your metabolism, etc. Our mindset matters — genes are an excuse only if we let them be.

Well being that I can look at my sisters and mom and totally see similarities in our appearances, I get the connection. However we do live differently as well and I can see the differences in our appearance. Makes sense to me.

This sounds really interesting. I’ve never believed we were “pre-programmed” to live a certain life and it sounds like this scientifically supports that. (more or less!) haha.
