The New Victory Theater Presents
Gravity & Other Myths’
A SIMPLE SPACE
No Set. No Safety Net. No Inhibitions.
This past Sunday my friend and I had the pleasure of being hosted at the New Victory Theater for their latest show, A Simple Space. It was simply amazing!
About A Simple Space:
Australian acrobatic ensemble Gravity & Other Myths makes its New York Premiere at The New Victory Theater from February 9 – 24, 2019 with A Simple Space, a stripped-down circus.
Favorites of the Spoleto Festival (2018, 2014) and the international festival circuit, Gravity & Other Myths will enthrall audiences in the fun and frenetic A Simple Space. Challenging each other in one astounding act after another, the company clears the stage to escalate childhood games–jumping rope, holding a handstand or eluding the floor–into artful acrobatics. With limited onstage seating, New Yorkers can feel the heat, see the sweat and hear every breath of this talented, tight-knit troupe mere inches away.
My Thoughts:
First of all, the New Victory Theater is the perfect place for this type of performance. I have seen quite a few shows that have a circus theme or vibe and it is incredible to be so close to the action. This performance contains barely any speaking parts, only music, and acrobatics. You can actually purchase tickets to sit on the stage at this performance! We were a bit nervous as the stage seating did contain many children, but it was fine. They stayed in their seats and were glued to the action! There were also opportunities for audience participation especially from those sitting on stage. When do you get a chance to toss balls at acrobatic performers? Right here you do!!!
Or have have someone defy gravity right over your head? Right here! Plus the New Victory Theater is affordably priced! That makes introducing your children to the theater easy. Everything is designed with children in mind. There are snacks and drinks available for purchase downstairs and activities based on the show you are attending. Once in the theater booster seats are provided to give even the smallest a chance to see the action and not struggle. Is this theater just for kids? Nope! Although you do need to be aware that many families and children are at every performance. My friend and I enjoyed this one ourselves sans kids and it was great!
