Daisy does it again! This time she is up-cycling old toys and knick knacks into ornaments. I totally got into this idea! I know like many of you I have a ton of kiddie items lying around. Wouldn’t it be great to turn that beat up Matchbox car into a tree ornament? I just picked up 2 artificial trees at a yard sale for each of boys rooms for $2.00. Now all I need is some is the following items and then to hit the toy supply.
Your List:
A package of brushes. ( Daisy bought a multi-sized pack at the dollar store)
Fine glitter ( Daisy reccomends Martha Stewart’s fine glitter available at Michael’s, don’t forget your coupons!)
Martha Stewart Glitter Glue (Use your coupon! Other glue will work, but this is thin and paints right on)
A funnel ( also Dollar Store)
Wax or parchment paper
Clear acrylic sealer (optional)
Bowl
Toys. shells, anything looking for a second chance at life!
First, I gave Daisy my little guys plastic lizard. She began by painting his body with the glue.
She then placed my lizard in a bowl to prepare for the glitter application.
Pick a color and shake where you applied the glue.
Use a fresh brush to brush away any loose glitter back into the bowl.
Here comes the funnel! There is no waste here, all that glitter goes right back into the container, hence using the bowl.
Now, to make this lizard two toned, Daisy next applied glue only to the feet.
Follow up with step one, and sprinkle glitter on glued areas and use the brush to brush off excess for all areas.
Almost done. Now to make it into an ornament Daisy would either hot glue a string to the back or just tie the string around the object.
This is an example of a knick knack made into a decorative item. I’m thinking of doing this with foam pumpkins for Thanksgiving.
Daisy also purchased these unfinished wood cutouts to turn into ornaments. I can’t wait to try this with my little guys. They loved looking at all the glittered items Daisy left at our home! Think teacher and grandparent gifts made by your kids!
Here is Daisy’s work area. Tip: Daisy likes to work on wax or parchment paper. The item you are working with won’t stick to it! You can also use a clear acrylic sealer to ensure the glitter does not rub off. These items can last for years in storage to be used again and again.
Let me know what you would like to see Daisy do!

LOVE this idea! We actually have a big bin of “collectibles” (toys needing re-purposing) We hand them out to trick-or-treaters. I may have to grab some out first for this project!

What a clever idea! I am sure your kids will be so proud of those ornaments. And I LOVE how you are thinking ahead – that’s me too =-) I am starting a Linky Party if you want to link up at http://livinglifeintentionally.blogspot.com/2011/10/first-ever-linky-party.html
