My oldest son has been obsessed with learning about different countries lately. Since we haven’t inherited a fortune traveling is off limits to us, but not restaurants. My son decided he wanted to try Japanese food.
He was thrilled with his Miso soup. He asked all sorts of questions about the interior of the place and was so excited to be here.
His little brother was not so thrilled, but wanted to try his hand at chopsticks after he saw big brother. They both did quite well and I was amazed that we hadn’t thought of this sooner. So this Summer we will be exploring countries by food.
Although he did not try the sushi, he did have his first veggie dumplings and shrimp tempura. He then announced how he’d like to go to dinner here. He also commented on the music playing and how lovely he thought it was to hear.
So next weekend we are going to Mexico. I can’t wait to see what he’ll try next. I’ll also need to be prepared with more information on the country. Not only did our little trip to Japan expand our diet, but it also was an opportunity to learn things about a different culture.

Hey Milena… I've always want to try a variation on this theme by having a "cultural" potluck dinner… i'd like to invite friends of different cultures/heritages to bring something… only problem is – i apparently don't have a diverse enough mix of friends!! haha… so i'm loving your idea too… the thing is say thai food which so many people love – I didn't love so much but only went once and sort of feel like to try a "new" food it helps to have a tour guide… anyway – i've given cultural exposure through food a lot of thought… and which/where was the japanese restaurant you chose? just curious… weird thing is my son tried edamame at japanese and loved it and even tried sushi! i'm going to take them to the chinese restaurant by hannaford's on route 9… i had to meet a friend there and really didn't know we had any "true" chinese RESTAURANTS in the area that weren't just take out… ok shutting up now

Love this idea!!! We just happened to eat at a Middle Eastern restaurant today. Unfortunately, my son didn't really try much except for their Lentil soup.
