It’s that time of the year when people that want to get a great holiday photo start their planning process. This is when you want to start thinking about what you would like your card to look like and plan your photo session to get that great picture your dreaming of getting. We all know it’s not that easy, especially when you have real little ones. One year at the photo studio my little guy fell off the platform and cut his nose, another year my oldest banged his forehead getting out of the car and had a lump on his head. We had to take a profile shot. You’d think I would have quit. I didn’t, but what I did do is change the way I get pictures taken for my holiday cards.
Here are some tips for getting a great picture:
1. Hire a photographer that shares your vision.
- Do they work well with children?
- Can you purchase the rights to your images so you can make your own cards or photo gifts?
- Are they willing to go on location with you?
2. Take the photos yourself or ask a family member. Just be patient and be willing to take a lot of photos to get the right shot.
3. Pick a location.
- Fall shots are beautiful, so think early if you want to get this photo
- Does your family have a special spot? Park, farm, historic site? Think outside the big stiff box.
- Try to coordinate the clothes to the location. ( think about your colors)
- Scout out areas of your house for indoor shots. (add lights, pine cones anything that say holiday to you)
4. Make them laugh! ( our photographer used words like” underwear” and “poopie” to make these guys laugh.)
5. Don’t be afraid to try something different. Try going with a black and white photo for a change.
6. Work with what you have. You might be surprised. ( My kids got eaten alive by mosquitoes during this photo session, but we moved on)
Checkout Shutterfly Family Photo Days for videos and more tips on creating your perfect card. They also have a holiday photo contest going on right now and you can get 5 free cards just for entering to win a year’s worth of free cards. Check it out HERE.
Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post, but I will be receiving 50 free cards for participating in this campaign. All thoughts are my own.

Well, I was so impressed with InkGarden’s quality and swiftness with the holiday cards that I just ordered 100 business cards from them via your link. The cost did come to just $4.49 for shipping.
