I just finished running a giveaway for Girl Land by Caitlin Flanagan. If you were not one of the two winners and have a daughter you should take a look at this book. Even as a mom of boys, I was brought back to the world of being a girl and crossing over into the land of being a woman again. Scary, just the thought of it. The idea of Girl Land is that area where we begin to leave childhood behind, but aren’t exactly women. Flanagan carefully crafts her writing with tales of a once long ago past of what it means to become a woman and what is occurring today. It is beautifully written and able to transport the reader back to when they were in that precious , but yet scary place.
Flanagan’s writing is fresh and unbiased. She does wish for us to go back to a time long ago, but rather voices concerns over how difficult it is being a girl through each time period. Nothing is off limits boys, other girls, menstruation, dating, diaries and sex it’s all here. I have to admit that it brought me back to a time when I was in that in between world. It even made me feel uncomfortable at times, but I couldn’t put it down. Now don’t get me wrong, this is not a book filled with advice, rather observations from the here and now. Girl Land reminds us to keep our daughters safe and look at our social history as a guide to see all that we have gained and lost throughout the years.
This book deserves a read!
