I didn’t expect my day to turn out the way that it did last Tuesday. After returning from a grueling camping trip I had to be in the city at 6:45 A.M. for the Today Show and an interview with Ryan Reynolds. A fellow writer had asked me to cover the event and I said yes without thinking that I would need to be on a 4:45 bus the next day. I’m glad my husband insisted that waking up early is not the end of the world. I had a blast. Hanging out with bloggers can be so much fun. I finally have an opportunity to talk to people who understand my work. It’s as if we are a cult of writers that share similar experiences. Now back to Ryan….
At The Today Show:
Before the races began Ryan Reynolds came up to the crowds and started talking to the people. We told him we were the bloggers he’d be meeting with after the show and he casually exchanged some words with us. He was tall, friendly, funny, and every bit as good-looking as he is on-screen. We watched the races and cheered as his character Turbo won the race. Reynolds and Lauer exchanged some heated words, all in fun I assure you, and he was given his prize by IZOD IndyCar Series Drivers Helio Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Tony Kanaan. The star than headed back towards the crowd and gave his racing wreath to a young fan. I couldn’t wait to see what he had to say.
The Interview:
Honestly, I was inspired. Ryan entered the coffee shop and sat down in front of about 10 of us in a very close and intimate setting. He sipped water and answered questions from the heart. The character Turbo is a snail that has a big dream and everyone in his life tries to hold him back. Reynolds talked frankly about when he was 12 and knew for sure that he wanted to be an actor. He wanted it so much that he didn’t care whether or not he got paid, or if he became a movie star. He just wanted to be able to make a living from it. He was scared and took a big step moving from Vancouver to LA. He said, ” My expectations were always very minimal for myself. I managed to thwart as much letdown as possible and that’s always served me really well, just keeping my expectations kind of reasonable.” Upon hearing his words I thought to myself about all the self sabotage I have done to throughout the years. All the times I talked myself out of trying something because someone didn’t agree with me or because I thought I wouldn’t be good at it. I admired his take on it.
He likes that his character TURBO can persevere even when everyone is telling him that he can’t follow his dream. Reynolds also acknowledged the fact that Turbo has a quick wit similar to his own. Growing up in a house full of brothers, and being the youngest, his brawn never served him only his wit. He actually spent time finding ways to annoy his siblings. Family and friends are very important to Reynolds. He prefers the quiet life as to the circus that celebrity can bring. Since he’s not a big drinker he seems to have escaped the trappings of being a celebrity. Reynolds said, “For me the balance hasn’t been difficult. I’m much, much happier being hermetic and retreating to my little cave and being quite happy there. ”
And of course I can always manage to embarass myself, how can I not. While taping the interview I realized my battery was low and turned off my camera. I forgot to mute it. Here is what followed:
BEEP!!!!!
Ryan Reynolds: And we’re done. It fits perfectly. ( Makes like the interview is over and he’s leaving.)
ME: I’ve got low battery.
Ryan Reynolds: It’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine. You’re sexting while we’re doing this. Let’s keep this civil.
Another writer shouted out:,”You’ll have to check the Twitter feed later”
Yes and that was my big moment with Ryan Reynolds.
Turbo was a great film. My kids loved it and have been playing with their snail eyes since! Catch it in theaters July 17, 2013 in 3D!
Disclosure: I was hosted by 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation. I was not compensated for this post and all opinions are her my own.
