One of the questions I get asked most is “What is the difference between juicing and a smoothie?” I have posted my green juice recipe and I always get emails searching for this information. So, here it is in nutshell:
First of all NO they are not the same thing. A juice is made in a juicer and a smoothie is made in a blender. Both are a filling drink, but the way that the nutrition is delivered differs as well as, how much nutrition you receive. A juice gives you instant energy while it takes longer for you to get that energy through a smoothie. A juice is liquid in consistency like water, where a smoothie is thick.
The scoop on the green juice:
First of all you need a juicer, you cannot make a juice in a blender. The juicer extracts the liquid from your fruits and veggies so it contains no fiber. This allows the juice to be absorbed into your bloodstream immediately. It’s easier to digest and is extremely alkaline. (That’s a good thing.)It’s low in calories, can help with weight loss and curbing your appetite. Juicing allows you to consume a huge amount of vegetables in one sitting. It’s amazing what can fit in a 8 oz glass.
The green smoothie scoop:
You would use a blender to make a smoothie. A blender mashes up the entire fruit and veggie once you’ve removed the pits and skins if need be. It uses the whole fruit. Smoothies have a lot of fiber, so if you are lacking fiber in your diet this is a great way to get some extra. These can be filling since they are full of fiber and can be used as a meal replacement. These also give you energy although it takes longer for your body to receive it. Smoothies are low in calories and help aid in weight loss. They also cost less to make and the equipment is easier to clean. You can also refrigerate a smoothie for up to 3 days although fresh is best.
It really comes down to you and what you prefer and need. I always tell people that if they want to try juicing visit your local thrift store and see if you can find one used. That’s what I did before I bought my Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus 850-Watt Juice Extractor. I’m not a fan of the texture of the smoothie and I feel people get confused and think that a sugary fruit smoothie is the same as a fresh green juice. A smoothie however can be a good way to begin adding more fruits and veggies to your life.
Does that answer most of your question? If I can help you feel free to leave me a comment and hopefully I’ll have that answer for you!
